Very funny. Though wondering how much harder new posts would be without your punjabi in-laws. :)
I have started following your blog recently and have seen them mentioned each time...
  • venky · 6 months ago
    That was hilarious :)
I've been enjoying your columns for a while and had to comment on this one! Keep them coming.

    Follow up question - majjan = buffalo => kukkad = ???
  • raven · 6 months ago
    @venky: Kukkad = chicken

@Sidin: loving your encounters with punjabi :D
  • sidin · 6 months ago
Kukkad is a word that just cracks me up every time I hear. It's just so intrinsically funny. Like karbooza.
  • Richa · 6 months ago
Sidin, for your enlightenment......."Kharbooza" happens to be a melon.......sweet juicy fruit that does not grow in mallu country.....
    :P

"..Which is a problem, as everyone else is from Jallandhar. And laugh like Royal Enfields."

    LOL! :)

May I please invite you to an “Indian Students Tweetup” in Melbourne. Lemme know later how it was. :)

Zaphinder Singh Beeblotra (name changed) - you dont say! :D

BTW How many Punjabi encounters does your book have? just curious...
  • roy · 6 months ago
hilarious man...btw I too did not get the joke till you explained!
  • Shaz3 · 6 months ago
Yup, for a second there i was squirming in my seat, ashamed that i had not got the joke. Fortunately, your explanation arrived to save the dignity.
  • Mathew Ludhiana · 6 months ago
Oye puttar...there is a very optimistic Punjabi saying..
"Life is like a box of Paneer, you always know its going to be white and fluffy!!"

    funny post as always!!
  • Sreejith Satheesh · 6 months ago
Just a thot.. how do you really know if your PIL hasn't taken the B suggestion to heart and isn't actually paalo-fying a majjan at home?? one tht comes occasionally on visits ... aah the sweet irony :P
  • Sangeetha · 6 months ago
Ha ha... I didn't get the joke either - the "gult" that I am :-)

btw, I didn't know even Buffalo is beef!!!! I always thought it's only the cow!
  • SR · 6 months ago
    PILs reply rhymes with 'ittefaaq'.......!
The giggles that ensued cost me my job, well almost! :-))
  • Shivangi · 6 months ago
haha very funny..."and other all round enthusiastic procurement of the phatte and subsequent chucking of the same?"...too good....I am a punjabi ...so I could get the joke though :)
  • samrasays · 6 months ago
awesome! tears came into my eyes as i was reading it and my colleagues sitting next to me could not but help themselves to genuinely ask me what was the matter... i just could not stop laughing :)))
As a Chandigarh ki kuddi with a Tambram husband i can kind of understand your situation. I am going to forward this to my hubby now. let's see if he gets it.
  • anusree · 6 months ago
Roflol.......funny as usual.....seems to be getting well wid ur inlwas..hehe
  • Bored in the afternoon · 6 months ago
sidin dude u rock. howww would i get thru this killer 2 - 3 o clock time slot otherwise.
  • Bored in the afternoon · 6 months ago
out of complete stupid boredom i ask.. Zaphinder Singh Beeblotra inspired by zaphod beeblebrox? and adding to the intrinsically funny / weird words list.. sanskrit word i came across "snaavaasthi majja".
  • Gokul · 6 months ago
    ROTFL post...
For your sake, I hope and trust the uncontrolled mirth of your in-laws did n't arise out of fact that the aforesaid space earmarked for the 'Majjan' by Mr. Beeblotra is currently regularly used by the dear SIL.
  • Avantika · 6 months ago
So Sidin, do you now know what a 'kharbooza' is?
The Fellow of mine will empathise with you having recently married into a marwari clan and being totally clueless about the language and all our foods! Good times arent they?
  • whatay_nish · 6 months ago
Before your closing lines, that was one of the first thoughts that crossed my head too. Beef curry right in the backyard! Wonder how much of milk, paneer, ghee you would actually wanna have before the tripping and falling results in natural death!
  • Aarbee · 6 months ago
Laughed out loud (non-stop) between "... as everyone else is from Jallandhar. And laugh like Royal Enfield" and "Why do I not get the clearly ground-breaking joke?"

Of course, because I understand punjabi and have relatives in Jalandhar. :)

    Love your page!!
  • Deepak · 6 months ago

best way to relax when u ve a pathetic morning at work :) u jus rock bhai..!!! lage raho ;-)
  • aptiwa · 6 months ago
are you sure "mallu son-in-law" doesn't equal majja??
this could be an even bigger "in" jokes of the family....
  • Aravind · 6 months ago
    Enjoyed:-)

Oh I so much know who u r talking about.. He told papa recently "Ab ki baar jab woh India aayega toh uski zabardasti shaadi kar dena"..hahaha
  • Archana Amperayani · 6 months ago
Nosy neighbors! Ah, I KNEW I was missing something really vital in the scheme of things in the phoren land. Good one :)

P.S: By the way, post after post, you are turning into slappy-sticky Sidinder Singh Ahuwalia from the handsome and humorous malayali boy with minor weight issues we knew you to be! Just a personal observation.
  • Archana Amperayani · 6 months ago
"enthusiastic procurement of the phatte and subsequent chucking of the same" - Take a bow man... Just take a bow :))))
  • sumeet · 6 months ago
huh ... you and your fascination with anything beefy (it was Pastrami earlier )... what maketh you say that PIL did not act on the suggestion?? :P

    Too much hai ji :)
  • Arpz · 6 months ago
:) how come the posting frquency has gone up so much? Not that I mind it.

Awesome post :) and hilarious :)
  • engineerindisguise · 6 months ago
well, atlast the Punjabi and Malayali perspective have a union of sorts :D
  • Shashi Kahpoor · 6 months ago
SIdin-though quite good-this article seems to be more in the 'juvenile' humor category than the Dave Barry league. Dude-you're writing books now-can you not find enough humorous situations around you to write about, than having to refer to missus, in-laws and their punjabiyat?
  • krist0ph3r · 6 months ago
btw i actually worked with a guy named phani kishore. phani was his first name. it was a standing joke at my office...whenever we would see something weird in the code, we'd say "that's phani!!!" :D
  • parvkaushik · 6 months ago

Now I know why it rings such a bell: it's the classic sound that Gabbar makes after the immortal line "tum teen aur woh do".

oh god! you are having so much fun in delhi! how? no mention of the humidity, traffic jams, irritating relatives! i would not dismiss the "majjan paallo" idea so quicly. seen what all they add to the milk these days, shampoo and conditioners and bleach and oil. enjoy!
  • Rajnish · 4 months ago
